Recommended books on law

The New Year is a time for New Year's resolutions for many of us. We want to drink less coffee, exercise more often, start a new hobby or simply read more. The following list of nine recommended legal-themed books (in random order except for first place) can help with cultivating this last resolution.

9. Lincoln lawyer Michael Connelly

Mickey Haller runs his law firm... from the back seat of the titular Lincoln. He rides in it to court, where he represents street dealers, drunk drivers and recidivists. Unexpectedly, he becomes the defence counsel for a wealthy Beverly Hills playboy accused of rape and assault. Although the case seems straightforward at first glance, the client's past may prove to be lethally dangerous for Haller.

8. Pelican Report, John Grisham

United States. Two Supreme Court judges die in unexplained circumstances. The FBI and CIA cannot identify any suspects. A law student from New Orleans identifies potential perpetrators. He creates a report presenting the results of his investigation, thus becoming a target of the killers.

7. Law Firm, John Grisham

The second title by the author of "The Pelican Brief" on the list. A legal thriller following the fortunes of a young lawyer, Mitchell, who receives a lucrative job offer at a boutique law firm. Shortly afterwards, the FBI informs him that the firm is involved in money laundering. Mitchell receives an offer he cannot refuse.

6. Modus Operandi of perpetrators of murders, Monika Całkiewicz

The author has analysed over 100 court case files concerning crimes against life from the years 2000–2008 adjudicated by the Regional Court in Warsaw. The author's professional experience, as well as her extensive knowledge in the fields of substantive criminal law, criminal procedure, criminology and criminalistics, are reflected in her interdisciplinary approach to the issue of the modus operandi of homicide offenders.

5. Influence people. Theory and practice, Robert Cialdini

• How to get someone to change their behavior?
• How to protect ourselves from other people's influence on our decisions?

Influence: Science and Practice contains the answers to these questions and much more. It is not for nothing that the book has already sold 2,000,000 copies worldwide. Its author, a world-renowned professor of psychology from Arizona, presents techniques for influencing others, along with a range of tips on how to deal with manipulation and the unwanted influence of other people. This is definitely a must-read for everyone, not just lawyers. For non-lawyers, it enables them to fend off attacks from fraudsters, and thus visit the offices of legal advisers and advocates less often…

How did regulations in the field of intellectual property law contribute to the success of Christian Louboutin, Mickey Mouse, Star Wars or Apple? Based on a number of colorful examples, the author shows the importance of IP law in creating contemporary market giants.

Another book by Katarzyna Grzybczyk. It introduces readers to the connection between IP and many contemporary activities: social media, e-sports and fan art. Based on interesting judgements, the author also shows how intellectual property regulations can restrict us in developing certain hobbies, and that a lack of familiarity with them can give rise to many problems.
